New Heritage Mural Celebrates Prestonpans

A new mural at Harlawhill brings together familiar Prestonpans landmarks, local heritage and nature in a colourful feature created especially for our members and visitors.

Local heritage brought to life

The mural was painted by Edinburgh-based Mexican artist Draya Madú and was designed around places and images that local people recognise. It includes Preston Tower and the Laburnum Arch, the Johnny Moat Stone, Arthur’s Seat and a robin, set within a bright landscape.

The finished work creates a strong sense of place inside the Centre and gives members an immediate talking point for reminiscence, conversation and connection with the community around them.

The project was supported through an award from Postcode Local Trust, made possible by players of People’s Postcode Lottery. The wider award also supported refurbishment work, flooring, equipment and minibus repairs at Harlawhill.

Draya attended the unveiling, where members also presented her with a framed drawing of Preston Tower by Amanda Owenson as a thank-you for creating something so distinctive for the Centre.

The mural also came at a fitting time as the Prestonpans Mural Trail marked its 25th anniversary, adding another piece of local art and heritage for people to enjoy.
