Who We Are

Harlawhill Day Care Centre was opened in Prestonpans in 1992 to provide day care for frail and elderly people living in the Prestonpans area. We are an independent charity that specialises in providing care for those who need daily support in order to continue living at home. We are based in the old Co-op branch shop on East Loan, Prestonpans which was rented and carefully converted to a comfortable standard with all the necessary kitchen, dining, sitting and leisure room areas. All this work was done under the guidance of one of our founders, Dr. Pat Gracie. The Prestonpans branch of the store was always a bright friendly place, the main grocery supplier in the locality and very well frequented by the locals. It was always busy, bustling with life and staffed with friendly helpful people, much like it is today. Our aim at the Centre, is to provide social contact and stimulation in homely surroundings for those who cannot get out of the house without assistance.

Our Facilities

We have a bright and welcoming lounge area with room to dance, be entertained or to carry out our varied games and activities. This leads to a dining area where breakfast and lunches are served and which is sometimes used for crafting and more individual interests. We also have two quiet rooms for use for treatments and visits or just for getting some time to yourself. There is disabled access and a new electronic push button door and two large specially adapted toilets. Not forgetting our specially adapted bus to get you here and back. We have free internet access so clients can use their own devices in the Centre or access one of the two iPads we have to play games, research the internet or just learn a new skill. An Alexa smart home device is in the lounge with unlimited music access for clients to listen to their favourite artist or genre. We also make use of a digital photo frame to display all the pictures we take of activities and events.

Our Activities

Our clients are entertained from the minute they are picked up until they arrive home. All our activities are client driven. Many of our activities are what you come to expect in Day Centre’s such as:- Bingo, Arts and Crafts, Reminiscing, Outings, Quizzes and Games However, we here at Harlawhill believe that music is life, music is fun and music is joyful. We love our music in many formats whether it is selecting songs from YouTube on our smart TV, having a sing-song with Alexa or on our karaoke system, or just simply listening and joining in with the many live entertainers we have here at Harlawhill. Those who are able can get up and dance while those who cannot, sing along or tap their fingers and toes. Sometimes people come in off the street just to see what all the noise is about.

Interested In Joining?

We have a referral process for people wishing to become a client which either you or someone else can make on your behalf. All referrals will be assessed by senior members of staff and in the case of limited or no spaces being immediately available, allocated spaces will be issues on a needs basis. The maximum number of clients we can accept each day is 16. The current cost for our services is £10 per day.

Dad loves loves loves to go here each week. The effect Harlawhill has on his mind set is amazing, he becomes a new man with the music therapy, and his health and well being looked after by the best support staff members ever. They are such a jolly, caring happy go lucky bunch who’s goal is to make sure Dad and all his friends he has made there have a wonderful experience every single time. Thank you Harlawhill, we know when Dad is in your care he is well looked after and his mind has many new experiences and memories being made each day.

That the Parliament commends everyone at the Harlawhill Day Centre in Prestonpans for their dedication in continuing to care for service users, despite having to close the facility during the COVID-19 lockdown; understands that the support and care offered by the Centre’s staff during the pandemic has included organising socially distanced VE Day street party celebrations with some of their members, delivering afternoon teas, which are funded by the Corra Foundation, and soup, sandwiches and cakes, supplying craft activities to help keep people active, giving members Easter eggs and cards, encouraging children to produce cards and pictures to pass on to members, and keeping everyone updated via social media, and thanks the staff and volunteers at Harlawhill, and all of East Lothian’s other day centres, for the care and support that they are continuing to provide to older people during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Thank you for giving my mum such a great day yesterday, she absolutely loved it and was so excited to go for the first time and you did not let her down, shes not ate much in days and came back raving about the wonderful food, the singer doing her a request, and how everyone was so attentive, putting her feet up, the ice cream and wee sherry 🥂 In a world were older people can often feel very devalued and invisible; Harlawhill Day centre make people feel valued and important, and their needs are met with compassion and empathy. Xxx Thank you harlawhill for all you do and the extra mile you go, to bring joy to your service users. ❤💙

Just wanted to message and say thank you! My aunt attended for the first time on Thursday. She has basically not left the house for three years and was beginning to ‘sit down to it’. What a revelation Thursday was. She LOVED it. She has finally got a bit perk about her, is so excited to get back and has finally shown her self some self love. She has her hair appointment booked and is perusing getting everything she needs in place at home. Even talking about upping the days when she is offered/can. I’ve always admired yourselves and now that a family member is there, I can see exactly what impact you can have. Thank you again 😊
