Proudly caring for our community since 1992

Where compassion and community come together

At Harlawhill, caring for our elderly community isn’t just what we do—it’s who we are. Since opening our doors in 1992, we've provided a safe, homelike environment where everyone feels valued, supported, and truly at home. Set in the lovingly converted former Co-op store in East Loan, Prestonpans, our centre embodies warmth and familiarity, inspired by our founder, Dr. Pat Gracie's vision of compassionate, person centred care. We specialise in providing care for those who need some extra support in order to continue living at home independently.

Our Facilities

We've thoughtfully designed every aspect of Harlawhill to make life easier for our members. Our accessible facilities ensure everyone feels safe and comfortable. With dedicated transport services, getting to and from the centre is hassle-free. Embracing modern technology, we help our members stay connected with family and engaged through interactive tools, enriching their lives each day. We are constantly upgrading our facilities to improve the services we can provide from modern toilets, kitchen, dining and lounge areas to smaller quieter rooms when you just need a break from it all.

Activities That Make a Difference

Activities are the heartbeat of Harlawhill, creating joy, connection, and mental and physical well-being. At the core is music therapy, which taps into the profound ability of music to unlock memories, uplift spirits, and bring comfort. From sing-alongs to various activities with familiar tunes, music creates powerful moments of reminiscence and connection. Alongside art and craft projects, memory games, and gentle exercises, our activities make staying active a natural and enjoyable part of every day. All our activity choices are led by our members and based on your likes, hobbies and things you have always wanted to try. Those who are able can get up and dance while those who cannot, sing along or tap their fingers and toes. Sometimes people come in off the street just to see what all the noise is about.

Compassionate Care with Lasting Impact

Every day, our dedicated team strives to make a real difference, enriching the lives of our members and supporting those who care for them. At Harlawhill, we provide not only companionship and care but also the peace of mind that families deserve. Join us at Harlawhill Day Care Centre, where compassion, dignity, and connection come first, helping our elderly community live life to the fullest. We’re more than just a day care centre; we’re a community. Contact us today to learn more and schedule a visit. Discover the warmth, care, and community spirit that sets us apart.

Dad loves loves loves to go here each week. The effect Harlawhill has on his mind set is amazing, he becomes a new man with the music therapy, and his health and well being looked after by the best support staff members ever. They are such a jolly, caring happy go lucky bunch who’s goal is to make sure Dad and all his friends he has made there have a wonderful experience every single time. Thank you Harlawhill, we know when Dad is in your care he is well looked after and his mind has many new experiences and memories being made each day.

That the Parliament commends everyone at the Harlawhill Day Centre in Prestonpans for their dedication in continuing to care for service users, despite having to close the facility during the COVID-19 lockdown; understands that the support and care offered by the Centre’s staff during the pandemic has included organising socially distanced VE Day street party celebrations with some of their members, delivering afternoon teas, which are funded by the Corra Foundation, and soup, sandwiches and cakes, supplying craft activities to help keep people active, giving members Easter eggs and cards, encouraging children to produce cards and pictures to pass on to members, and keeping everyone updated via social media, and thanks the staff and volunteers at Harlawhill, and all of East Lothian’s other day centres, for the care and support that they are continuing to provide to older people during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Thank you for giving my mum such a great day yesterday, she absolutely loved it and was so excited to go for the first time and you did not let her down, shes not ate much in days and came back raving about the wonderful food, the singer doing her a request, and how everyone was so attentive, putting her feet up, the ice cream and wee sherry 🥂 In a world were older people can often feel very devalued and invisible; Harlawhill Day centre make people feel valued and important, and their needs are met with compassion and empathy. Xxx Thank you harlawhill for all you do and the extra mile you go, to bring joy to your service users. ❤💙

Just wanted to message and say thank you! My aunt attended for the first time on Thursday. She has basically not left the house for three years and was beginning to ‘sit down to it’. What a revelation Thursday was. She LOVED it. She has finally got a bit perk about her, is so excited to get back and has finally shown her self some self love. She has her hair appointment booked and is perusing getting everything she needs in place at home. Even talking about upping the days when she is offered/can. I’ve always admired yourselves and now that a family member is there, I can see exactly what impact you can have. Thank you again 😊
